Now, as we all know, Public Holidays in Oman are never something that one can completely count on being announced until usually a few days before, so the dates I've put below are strictly guide dates for you to work with when planning your vacations for 2014.
Dont get mad at me if the dates are wrong!
1 Jan - New Years Day (not usually officially given)
13 Jan - Prophets Birthday
27 May - Lailat Al-Ma'raj
29 June - Ramadan starts (not a holiday, but good to know)
23 July - Renaissance Day
28 July - Eid al Fitr (usually a few days)
4 Oct - Eid Al Adha (usually a few days)
25 Oct - Hijiri New Year
3 Nov - Ashura (not normally a holiday)
18 Nov - HM's birthday / National day
25 Dec - Christmas (never officially given)
Enjoy!!!!

Ashura is a Shia event. I have never known Oman to give it as a holiday. AN
ReplyDeleteAnon: Even if you are not shia (I am sunni) Ashura is actually a day Muslims (according to Sunnah) fast (Ibadhi and Sunni). If you are Jafari Shia (and other shia sects probably), your mourn the death/betrayal of Hussein. Sunni and Ibadhi fast because Ashura was the month that Allah freed the Jews/Believers from Pharoah in Egypt:). It exists for all Muslims but is practiced differently between Shia and Sunni/Ibadhi. For the two groups it has different connotations.
ReplyDeleteThanks OPNO. But am I right that Sythe shouldn't list it as a public holiday in Oman? AN
ReplyDeleteAnon: Usually not. I've known it to be a holiday once in my whole time in Oman, but maybe that was for something else?
ReplyDeleteSame with New Year's, Christmas, (Christmas was a public holiday once or twice even though only expats really celebrate it).
