Update: I just got back from driving by the area, the ROP are on scene and have blocked access to the Ministries road, before the British Embassy at one end, and by the Diplomatic Club at the other end.I couldn't hear, or see, any evidence of a mass protest that had gone violent, but no one was allowed to even enter the area.
The following email was sent out earlier this evening by the US embassy in Oman:
From: US Department of State Warden Message [mailto:USDoSWardenMessage@STATE.GOV] Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2012 7:07 PM To: ACS_OMAN@CALIST.STATE.GOV Subject: U.S. Embassy Muscat, Oman - Emergency Message - September 13, 2012

Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens
Security situation in Oman
Demonstrations have begun in front of the U.S. Embassy in Muscat. It is possible that the demonstrations could grow in size. U.S. Embassy personnel have been instructed to avoid the area of the Embassy. There may also be additional protests in the coming days. In light of recent attacks against U.S. missions in Cairo, Benghazi, and Sanaa, U.S. Embassy Muscat is carefully monitoring the current security situation in Muscat and throughout the country.
We remind U.S. Citizens to avoid areas where demonstrations are occurring, and recommend that you avoid the Embassy area. Even protests that are intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. As always, please be aware of your surroundings and monitor local media.
The Embassy advises U.S. citizens to maintain valid travel documents and enroll with the Department of State through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.
The U.S. Embassy in Muscat is located on Jameat A’Duwal Al Arabiya Street in the diplomatic area of Shatti al Qurum in the capital city of Muscat. The telephone number is [968] 24-643-400 and the fax number is [968] 24-643-53.

Has anyone seen the protest? What is the issue? Is it another case of "I want a high-paying job with no responsibility"?
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see how the local papers report on this one!!
ReplyDeleteThat's if they decide to mention it.
I received an email with that warning too, that's when I realized that I got busy with work and didn't notice the CNN and youtube.thank you for 'enlightening' us.;-)
ReplyDeletePeace everyone!
That person who started the video that started it all...is pathetic. Why can't we just have peace and let it be....i remember one atheist friend spamming us with emails .... Shoving her belief on our faces...poor girl.
ReplyDeleteWe gotta teach respect to our kids...soon!
The video had nothing to do with it. It was a deliberately planned attack, the video is only being used as a ruse.
ReplyDeleteThe real problem is with people that think that their "religious beliefs" give them license to commit murder.
I personally don't care if you worship cabbage heads in your backyard. But what if I did; and I found out that you didn't worship cabbage heads in your backyard and I staged an armed assault upon your residence. Would you blame me or would you blame the person that showed me a video of your backyard without the appropriate cabbage head alter?
I have full faith in the ROP and Omani Military to keep everyone in this country safe. One of the perks of living in an overly militarized country ;).

I agree. The ROP and the ISS, despite the gripes we have from time to time, do a great job. Bless them!
I am not a conspiracy theory fun at all, but the way this movie story publicly unfolds smells very fishy to me...hope that I am totally wrong and this ugly story quickly comes to an end. But if I happen to be right than shame on the electoral spin doctors of any candidate in any political competition...
ReplyDeleteQUOTE OF THE WEEK!:
ReplyDelete""I condemn stupidity. I don't give a damn about some idiot and his film. The US government has nothing to do with this, nor do innocent embassy employees. Almost everyone I know thinks the protests are beyond stupid. Practice your faith, be peaceful, and be a GOOD EXAMPLE. All you protesters are just setting us back a thousand miles. Islam is peaceful. Your version is wacked."
Well said. Thank you
Mti"
I agree!
What you sow that you reap, the trouble makers just are testing the sentiments and patience of muslims and mind you time is not far when the judgement will be given
ReplyDeletePeople in West should know how much we Muslims love our beloved Prophet (pbuh). They do not know how much we love our beloved Prophet (pbuh) … that Muslims are willing to sacrifice their lives for him.
ReplyDeletePeople in Europe can be jailed for just questioning the actuality of the massacre because it hurt the sentiments of the Jews.
Muslims are being hurt in the name of ‘freedom of speech’ which cannot be acceptable and require proper legislation to be made to avoid such incidence.
Why should people in the West know how much you love your prophet? It staggers me how little Muslims here know about many things in the Western world.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Muslims are not sacrificing their lives for him, they are murdering non-Muslims because of it. I don't recall any news of Muslims dieing due to the screening of a film that would have not been seen by more than a handful of people had some idiots gone on a rampage, most of whom I have no doubt have never heard of YouTube, never mind watched any excerpts from the film in question.
It is a pity indeed. I hope everyone remains safe in Oman. Political strife should not escalate into physical hostility. So I just went to Africa / Zanzibar for our luxury safari holidays.
ReplyDeleteAs long as everyone knows how to follow rules and laws in a specific place then they will manage to live a life peacefully. This only means you and your family could live without distractions from anything.
ReplyDeleteWhenever we may be, we should always have to make it a point that we follow the current events. Social media plays a big part that helps many citizens to be aware on what is happening on any place in the world.
