What a subject for me to talk about today! Mattresses! Like it or not, we use them every day for a number of hours, and I wanted to share my experience with my Raha mattress - because I'm totally in love with it.
When I first got to Muscat, 4 and a half years ago, a colleague at the time took me to Lulu's on my very first day and said order a mattress now because it takes a few weeks to come. I was all a bit confused with everything and so purchased a Raha 1001 nights king size mattress for about RO 55 and carried on with all the things one does when they first move here.
Flash forward to May 2011 - my 1001 night mattress is well and truly battered, and my back was killing me - it was definitely time to find a new mattress. I went to the Towell bed centre, Fahmy Furniture, Khimji Furniture, ID Design, the IKEA catalog order store in Shatti, and a couple of other furniture places, trying to find a new mattress. I really wanted to get a TempurPedic memory foam mattress, but the price was really off-putting - North of RO 1000!!
In my search, I happened to tweet about my ongoing search for a new mattress, when someone from Raha emailed me and invited me to tour their factory right here in Rusayl. I don't know about you but I had no idea that Raha was an Omani brand, and definitely had no idea that they had a factory here, so I accepted the invitation and was actually quite excited to visit a factory. The last time I visited a factory that was not for work was an industrial photo printing plant in the UK and I was 12. Joy. I've actually been to quite a few factories but I digress.
So, last May, I went on a tour of the Poly Products L.L.C. state-of-the-art manufacturing complex spread across an area of 45,000 square meters in the Rusayl Industrial Estate of Oman. I wont get into the in-depth detail of the inner workings of the factory, but it is significant: they manufacture their own foam products, springs & coverings there, along as make additional foam products for other uses, as well as furniture too. I really was quite surprised at how involved the factory was, and how many uses there are for foam products!
I learned that Raha is a brand owned by Poly Products L.L.C. and that the parent company has been in operation since 1979, and has a factory here in Oman, as well as one in Germany & 2 smaller ones in the UAE. The InterCon, Hyatt, Al Bustan and The Chedi all have their mattresses made by Raha, and a very long list of 5* hotels in the region outside Oman also buy their mattresses from Raha. So their stuff is top-drawer quality.
After seeing how the mattresses were made, and just how much technology went into them (who knew?!) I decided that I was going to buy local, and selected the RO 320 Cloud Nine Expectations mattress. A week later the mattress was delivered, and now, 8 months later, I feel comfortable fully recommending this mattress. It is a no-turn mattress and is made up of pocketed-springs, multiple layers of foam, including a memory foam layer, and a quilted pillow top layer as well. I can guarantee that after these first 8 months the mattress has not become lumpy or uncomfortable, and my back pains have simply vanished. I won't lie, I did receive a modest discount, it was not free (no where near free!) and I don't want people to think that this is some paid-for advert, because it really is not. But none-the-less, Raha is a shining example of Omani products, and I for one had no idea they were even Omani!
If you find yourself on the hunt for a new mattress here in Oman, or even further afield, take the time to check out the Raha mattresses, I can guarantee they are built to last and are extremely comfortable. I've not had back pain in months, and I attribute a lot of that to the fact my mattress is helping me when I sleep. Here in Muscat, Fahmy Furniture in Al Khuwair is the main retail outlet for Raha mattresses.

Lots of freebies coming your way from Hi Fm/OHI Group!
ReplyDeleteThis must be making you sleep better.
Expatmummy - "LOL" is a strange comment.
ReplyDeleteTo the Anonymous commenter.... OHI Group as far as I know have absolutely nothing at all to do with Poly Products International, and if you even read the article you would have known I got this mattress, through paying for it, 8 months ago.
I hope my article is actually of some use to someone, but I see people are hating as usual.
Hi! I wonder why you say "people are hating it as usual". Its a nice post and I love omani English Blogs and how the bloggers in muscat network though I haven't really participated in any of them.
ReplyDeleteMost of the upholstery and mattresses we have had in the nearly 2 decades of growing up here have been from Raha and its truly a good quality product like most Omani products, if I may say so.
Cheers,

I find it funny too...did you really visit the factory?
ReplyDeleteDear Me... mutter mutter mutter, it's all what you can utter, and this is time it's all boggy clutter!
ReplyDeleteAre you ever going to say something sensible here beyond tacky marketing for a little freebie.

About 6 years ago, when I was living in the UAE, I splurged on a weekend at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Dubai. I loved the bed, so asked the manager what kind it was. He gave me the contact info for the Poly Products rep in UAE. I met him and he proudly gave me tour of his warehouse and explained how the various mattresses were made. I ordered a mattress set just like the one in the hotel + headboard. The mattress is a Simmons, made in Oman, and I still have it here, back in its native land. Every night I am so thankful. A super quality product!
ReplyDeleteProud to be Omani! I love Raha mattresses they really are super comfy. We've had guests from Bahrain recently and they were all wondering where we got our mattresses from.
ReplyDeleteQuick question, what's the Ikea order catalog you mentioned in Shatti?
Thanks for this great post, it *does* sound like a paid ad but it's truly worth the hype!
Avoid 3 star Raha mattresses at all costs!!
ReplyDelete4 star is in a different league altogether. Very comfortable, and at a good price.
OCI yes, I really went to the factory and had a tour, and I really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteFatewm, its in a shop above Darcys kitchen in shatti. Between spa and jewelry stores on right side as you go upstairs. I think its a travel agent or something, but they are the IKEA order people.
I found it ineresting. I knew they were Omani because they had a "made in Oman" tag on them but I didn't know where their factory was. I am glad because all made-in-uae mattresses I have tried (of course not the imported ones) have been terribly hard.
ReplyDeleteRAHA is no more quality mattress now. because of their poor quality mattresses , simmons us company is no more associated with themm...
ReplyDeleteI heard that Raha used to make simmons, but perhaps the licensing fee was not worth it, and besides, my Raha 5* mattress is amazing, had it 3 years. For those people like Sythe originally who buy the cheap 50-70 rial Raha mattresses, well you get what you pay for.
ReplyDeleteAn equivalent mattress from beautyrest or simmons would probably be around RO 700+, so it's a great deal, I'll buy another Raha for sure.
This discussion remembers me ..I slept on Simmons mattress at Shangrila Muscat and I was in love...
ReplyDeleteBest mattresses available in Town are Intercoil Mattresses ..Check any Home Center outlet in Oman...
ReplyDeleteRAHA a sinking ship. looking for poor and cheap ways of Promoting their mattress. please buy a mattress for RO 300 and help them to close a omani owned company..
ReplyDeleteWhat's with all the hate, People? I wish I had known about Raha's more deluxe line of mattresses when we lived in Oman. I love to see Omani companies that MAKE stuff get some credit. I'd like to see more reports and information on local Omani companies that actually make stuff not related to the oil and gas sector.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sythe. Nice reporting.
"I slept on Simmons mattress at Shangrila Muscat and I was in love..."
ReplyDeleteI have been in love on many a Simmons mattress :)

please can raha read this and start making decent memory foam bed toppers? i havent found any for sale in oman and you could sleep on a table with a good density topper!
ReplyDeleteSomeone said "Raha people is made for cricket " Most of Raha employees Organise cricket tournaments since company never pays salary on time .
ReplyDeleteLooking for a mattress in Kuwait I came across Raha. Not having heard of them I decided to search the net and found your message. Thanks for your comments, they've helped me A LOT!!
ReplyDeleteThe same person as before. I was in Oman at Xmas. Lovely place, you are lucky to be there and congrats on having a great company like this.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is that my Simmons mattress manufactured in Oman has changed my life. 3 years ago I stayed in a hotel in Doha and slept like nobody's business for 9 long hours. The morning after I asked the hotel manager about the type of bed/matress and he gave me the contact details of Raha's dealer in Qatar. Once in Bahrain, and as I was in need of buying couple of beds & mattresses I contacted him. It took like a month but waiting was really worth it. In fact I will soon be relocating, hopefully to Oman, and both beds will come with me. That is for sure. Therefore, my advice to whom ever needs to get a new mattress should get it from Raha (the top quality line)as I am aware not all their beds are that fantastic. To get such a mattress is buying the best beauty treatment available in the market.
ReplyDeleteRegards from Bahrain
A good mattress is a key to a goodnight sleep. I have been struggling sleeping for the past couple of months and just last week, we decided to purchased a new mattress. Since then, my sleep improved dramatically.

The RAHA mattresses are one of the best bedding products in the world. I thinks it is also used and trusted by some of the largest international hotel chains such as Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Hilton, Shangri-la, and others.

I beg to disagree to the person above me but most 5-star hotels, albeit outside the Sultanate of Oman, uses Sierratone or Uratex for their king size mattress. I googled it. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteI believe homewood suites slidell is also using Raha mattress. Great choice in my opinion. It's very comfortable, affordable, and soft.
ReplyDeleteI have a Raha 3 stars and I am quite disappointed.
ReplyDeleteone of your more useful tips…hard to buy anything of quality here. Would have been nice if you included a little map of how to find the elusive shop. Still appreciate info on finding valuable quality needed items !!!
ReplyDeleteThat was worth a post.I totally agree .Me too in love with my Raha mattress... But I go for hard type.
